They've arrested Nick Griffin for remarks against Islam... They've been holding members of Griffin's posse for five months without charges.

The lefties would say that it's America that has a first-amendment rights problem. People should look around; other 'civilized' countries don't even have the pretense of freedom of speech.

Let freedom ring! Hooray for America!

Let freedom ring! Hooray for America!

Just remember that we aren't the only 'civilized' country in the world with freedom of speech.

We are, however, the only country with the bell.

Remind me again, which are the other countries where political or racially-sensitive speech is protected?

Actually, to name one, the United Kingdom.

Freedom of speech is formally protected under the Human Rights Act of 1998. Previously, the right to free speech had been covered by de facto ruling.

Your buddy Griffin was arrested for violation of the Public Order Act of 1986. Basically for harrassment and trying to incite violence. We have similar laws in the U.S. If you start screaming 'fire' in a crowded theater, you're going to get a free ride in a police car. If I get caught talking earnestly about my plot to blow up George Bush's kneecaps, I will get hauled in. There's also laws against slander, libel, etc. that - depending on their use and interpretation - would violate free speech.

I think you'll find that just about every non-dictatoral, industrialized country has laws or rulings that cover and protect free speech. It's easy enough to write such laws. The tricky parts come from interpretation and ruling. (Jeez - I hope FilthyHippie reads this...) Which is why we need lawyers. And the ACLU. If we didn't have free speech violations in this country, the ACLU wouldn't exist.
